Apple Marina Bay Sands

Whenever complaints about Apple pop up — like, say, this weekend's story about a ripoff app topping the charts in the App Store — some number of people will respond along the lines of, “Well, what do you expect from a company run by a penny-pinching beancounter like Tim Cook?” I.e. that Apple, under Cook's leadership, has gotten cheap, and the reason for Problem X is that Apple refuses to spend money to fix it.

This is nonsense. Apple is not cheap. A miserly penny-wise/pound-foolish company does not design and build architectural marvels like this new store in Singapore. Apple spends lavishly on what they care about and consider important.

Agree with this from John Gruber, but to me it also gives weight to the fact that it seems like Apple are not investing enough in the App Store experience.

Messaging Systems

One of iMessage's greatest features is how it takes over SMS and MMS. It does it really well but transparently and I'm guessing that in a some cases it could be saving people money on their messaging bills when their messages are sent over data or wifi instead of actually being counted as an SMS or MMS.

Playable demo for space shooter 'Phoenix 2' available via App Clips

App Clips looked like a good idea and with it's focus on small package sizes, it's going to be a win for consumers. But this is a very interesting use of the feature. In this case, it's being used to provide a demo of a game, but this could be a great way to offer a demo or short trial of an app.

My Drinks Journal

There's also a beautiful Baby Book which I would have loved to have for each of my kids. Of course we journaled their first years but this looks like something a little more special with prompts to help you tell a really good story of their lives.

For now though, the drinks version is probably more apt for me.

Facebook lobbying for option to make Messenger default on iOS

Yes, because Facebook being the app that handles all of your SMS information is going to end really well, isn't it?

Facebook has recently heavily criticized Apple for restrictions on gaming apps, ad targeting, and in-app purchases. Last month, Facebook warned advertisers that Apple's upcoming anti-tracking tools could cause a more than 50 percent drop in Audience Network publisher revenue due to the removal of personalization from ads within apps. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also referred to Apple's App Store as monopolistic and harmful to customers. Apple "blocks innovation, blocks competition," and uses the ‌App Store‌ to "charge monopoly rents," he said.

I've covered this already, Facebook crying because their creepy tracking won't work anymore is laughable anyway, but to say that Apple is block innovation and competition is a little rich. I mean, they bought Instagram, a rising competitor and from using the app everyday, it feels like they've just turned it into a cash cow by flooding feeds and stories with ads. Oh, and they rip off every decent feature that other apps come up with.
