Making practical use of the iPhone 14 Pro's always-on display

Week 266 was posted by Charanjit Chana on 2022-11-28.

I often borrow ideas from others on how to make the best of a feature like the always-on display, but today I actually came up with my own use for it.

While preparing some pizza dough for the family today, I kept having to check the recipe which meant waking up my phone multiple times (a real first world problem). Once I'd finished I figured out a great way to do this in the future.

By taking advantage of the always on display, I've put a wallpaper together that I can use to display the ingredients and basic steps in a recipe card format.

Obviously, I don't want this recipe as my permanent wallpaper so by linking it to a Focus Mode, I now have a pizza-prepping mode on my phone that puts this wallpaper on my phone and is still visible even when the display dims.

I thought it might be a bit annoying if a Live Activity got in the way, so I've condensed it down as much as I can to hopefully avoid that issue.

Screenshot of an iPhone 14 Pro with a wallpaper showing a basic pizza dough recipe. The screen also has a Live Activity from the 2022 World Cup of a match between Spain and Germany. The text for the recipe is formatted in such a way that it does not interfere with the Live Activity.

I took a screenshot in the evening, while the Spain vs Germany match at the 2022 World Cup was being played to show that the Live Activities don't get in the way. You can also see the custom "Pizza" Focus Mode I set up displayed at the bottom.

The recipe for pizza dough is taken from the BBC Good Food and you're welcome to download my version of it for free on Gumroad.
